Attracting foreign investments in Harghita county during 2013-2021

According to the report published by the National Bank of Romania, the situation in Harghita county is on the rise, thus in 2013 Harghita county attracted only 113 million euros in foreign direct investments, instead in 2020 direct investments in Harghita county amounted to 223 million euros. The company with the highest turnover in the county is ROMAQUA Group Sa. And the largest forwarder in the county is Iris Service, in 2020.

According to data published by the National Bank of Romania, Harghita County ranked 31st nationally in terms of the balance of foreign direct investments (FDI) at the end of 2020. With a value of over 223 million euros, foreign investments from Harghita County 0.3 % of the values of foreign investments at the level of Romania, respectively 2.6% of the values of foreign investments in the Central Region. Regarding foreign investments per inhabitant, with a value of 739.7 euros/inhabitant, Harghita county is below the regional average (3662.5 euros/inhabitant) and below the national average (4505.3 euros/inhabitant), occupying a 29th position nationally in terms of this indicator.

In 2021, Harghita county attracted 253 million euros of foreign direct investment, although we identify an increase in the degree of investment attraction in the area compared to 2020, it must be stated that at the national level the county ranks 23rd among the 41 counties in Romania.

Although the state of alert imposed by the authorities as a result of the persistence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic continued throughout the year, foreign investors adapted to the new economic conditions, unlocking the investment projects suspended at the beginning of 2020 in response to the blockade economic emerged following the quarantine imposed by the authorities, and initiating new projects.

Investments in the development of activity in Romania were made both in the form of reinvested profit, in the situation where the resident companies recorded a profit in 2021, and in the form of capital contribution and intragroup loans.

The net flow of FDI recorded the level of 8,940 million euros in 2021, approximately three times higher than the previous year, the evolution of the indicator being similar to the value recorded at the level of developed economies, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). This value represents, moreover, the second highest value of the net flow of FDI recorded in Romania, after that of 2008 (9,210 million euros).
